WDFL ROUND UP WEEK 9

Sunday 28 October, 2018

There was a shock result this weekend as premier newcomers St Johns comfortably beat reigning champions Callow End 3-0 at the YMCA ground. Strikes from Ben Price, Matt Turner and Ben Pope helped St Johns secure their second and unlikely win of the season. Oak Apple beat Clifton Rovers 1-3 and in doing so remain the only unbeaten team in the division, with solo strikes from Tyler Attwood, Joey Haines and Euan Murray. Josh Stafford replied for Rovers. Down at the bottom of the table Worcester Athletic beat The Bell 2-1, which has lifted them to mid table courtesy of strikes from Macauley Austin and Tiago Ribeiro.

The remainder of the league was largely on county cup duty this weekend and unfortunately, we lost 8 teams in the 1st round of the Junior. The largest home league win went to FC Korono who beat Mostyn Rangers away from home 2-6. Joe Bates and Charlie Tomlinson both scoring doubles. Drakes Broughton are safely through with a convincing 2-5 away win over Cookley Sports. Ben Ladds and Andrew Ward with a brace a piece each for rangers. FC Korono and Kempsey United are also through after winning on penalties.

Albeit with fewer games in the opening round of the minor, the leagues luck was no better with all our teams that faced external opposition going out. However; hotshot Leon Roberts continued his fine form bagging a brace for Powick in what may have been a league title battle warmup as they beat current division 3 leaders New Dales 1-2. Neil Radburns strike was not enough as New Dales interest in the competition is ended. Worcester Saints are comfortably through after thrashing struggling Eaton Reserves 5-1. Adam Beresford and Kristian Bottrell both with braces for Saints.

In the league Colwall St James ended their recent poor run of form and extended Eaton’s as they won 4-1. Two from Ben Ledbury and strikes from Jonathan Leary and Paul Fletcher also helped lift Colwall off the bottom of division one.

Colwall Wanderers maintained their 100% start in division 2 with a narrow 1-2 victory away to fellow title challengers Worcester City Wanderers. In what was effectively a “six pointer”, the gap over second place Wanderers is now 9 points, albeit Wanderers do have a game in hand on the leaders. Rifleman shot six past visiting Worcester Saints without reply. A Matt Winsper double and 4 single strikes helped the gunners shoot up to 4th spot. Perdiswell Colts beat Hornets 1-3 away to secure only their second win of the season, with Joseph Care on target with a double for the Colts.

In division 3 Grosvenor Sports took advantage of the all cup action as they smashed Lower Teme & Martley Reserves 6-1 to climb the table to fifth. Joshua Farnsworth fired in the only hat-trick this weekend, Darren Palmer notched a double and a strike from Craig Collins ensured a good day for Sports. Drakes Broughton Rangers Reserves remain on a single point as they lost 3-1 away to Droitwich Spa Eagles. Simon Jones on target with a double for the Eagles.
