WORCESTER LEAGUE ROUND UP - 20 MAY

Monday 21 May, 2018

The inaugural final of the Vaughn Albone Memorial Cup saw a hard fought 1-0 win for Callow End over old rivals Hallow. In an even contest, chances were few and far between with both defences on top. Nick Macpherson rattled the woodwork for Callow End before Joe Wood grabbed what turned out to be the match winner. Hallow threw everything forward in search of an equalizer, including goal keeper Wes Joyce, who only lasted two minutes as an outfield player before getting sent off for violent conduct. Callow End’s Joel Hobbs cleared off the line from Zaq Hussain as they held on to clinch victory.

Earlier in the day, the Vaughn Albone Plate final was won by The Bell, who came from a goal down to beat Arrow 2-1. Joe Southam netted two second half goals for The Bell, after Kieran Scollan had given Arrow an interval lead.

A successful day, organised by Matt Brookes of The Gloster Arms, raised over £1,500 for St Richards Hospice who cared for Vaughn in his last days.

The destination of the McDonalds Worcester & District Football League Division 3 title will be decided next Sunday when AFC Mazak meet Express Falcons on KGV Brickfields. Mazak just need to avoid defeat to clinch the title, but Falcons have to win if they are to be crowned champions. Tom Corbett hit a hat-trick for Mazak who defeated Masons 3-2. However, Falcons went down 2-1 at home to Lower Teme & Martley, Callum Morris and Brandon Philips the Martley scorers. Elsewhere goals from Russ Carlin, Tom Birchley and Mitch Parrish gave Freemasons Arms a 3-1 win at Powick.

Division 2 champions FC Korono strolled to a 6-2 victory over Northwick Saints, Lukas Eilberg cracking a treble and Julian Hopcraft a double. Eaton secured the runners-up spot with a 3-2 win against Worcester City Wanderers. This match was notable for Eaton’s ‘goal of the season’ – a bullet header from 15 yards into the roof of the net by Kenny Radford, Steve Pitt and Luke Roberts also on the score sheet. A nine goal thriller at FC Star & Garter saw the home team beat Malvern Vale 5-4. Andy Jones and Colin McGarra both bagged a brace for the Star. Oliver Smith and Connor Millar also notched doubles for Colwall St James who crushed Warndon Villages 5-0.
